Hardwood Floor Cleaning

There are different types of floors in homes, including hardwoods, laminate, carpet and rugs. Hardwood floor cleaning is necessary to maintain the beautiful look of wood. If you have hardwood floors, you need to protect them from stains and dust mites. This article will provide you with some tips on hardwood floor cleaning.

Cleaning solution is a neutral pH, so it is safe for most floors. With proper application and regular cleaning coatings, you will get more use out of your hardwoods before refinishing is needed. Before using your floor cleaning solution, make sure that you have the proper equipment and protective clothing such as long sleeves, a mask and goggles.

You should use a soft sponge or brush when cleaning your floors with cleaning solutions. If you find that you are having trouble applying the cleaning solution properly, try using a sponge made specifically for hardwood floors. Another option is to invest in a polisher. Polishing will provide the best results when used at a high speed. Always use a low speed when cleaning a floor. You don’t want to risk damaging the finish or staining the wood.

Never use too much pressure when vacuuming. Sponges, rags, brushes and vacuum attachments can remove the sealant that keeps your floor protected. Never use too many suction cups while vacuuming. Vacuuming should be done at a constant speed and not a rapid speed. If you need to get rid of a small stain, don’t overdo it by vacuuming too many times at a time.

Don’t use your hardwood floor for a quick surface wipe when cleaning your floors. These pads are designed to wipe a hard surface and will remove the sealant that protects the wood. You don’t want to damage the finish of the wood or put further wear and tear on the floors.

When you are done cleaning your floors, vacuum with a bristled brush or a scrub brush. Don’t use a scrubbing brush or a soft sponge on your wood floors as this can damage the finish and scratch the wood. Use a stiff bristled brush or a buffing pad if you are concerned about scratching the finish.

After cleaning your hardwood floors, you may want to give them a thorough sanding. This should be done every year or every few years. If you don’t have the right tools, sanding may damage the finish and can possibly cause some cracking. If you use the wrong products, you may end up ruining the finish and cause the wood to warp or bend.

For stains and spills, a wet mop will work well. Be sure to use a non-skid surface for your floors. If you spill something acidic, such as juice or wine, immediately wipe the area dry with a wet cloth to prevent the stain from absorbing into the wood.

With the proper care, hardwood floor cleaning will give you years of use. With regular cleaning, you can prolong the life of your floors.
